Karen was born and raised in Louisiana and grew up on the Northshore of Lake Ponchatrain, a short drive from New Orleans. From a young age, she’s been drawn to all things fantasy and science fiction related. In college, she discovered LARPing and gaming, which she was naturally attracted to due to her love of theater and performing. She attended her first convention in 1996 (CoastCon, of course) and fell in love with it.
Doug is originally from New Orleans East. From watching Doctor Who on WYES, to nerding out about video games and classic systems, to roleplaying with friends in college, he’s been fascinated with all things geek since he was a kid. Doug’s first convention was NOSFFF (New Orleans Science Fiction & Fantasy Festival) in 1995.
In 2000, Karen and Doug met through a live-action Vampire: The Masquerade game in New Orleans. She walked up to him and said, “Aura Perception”, and they’ve been together ever since. Doug introduced Karen to the joy of working for conventions a few months later, by getting her to volunteer to sign up players for a game at Crescent City Con.
Both Karen and Doug have worked assorted positions for local conventions over the past 17 years. They’ve worked for both CoastCon and Crescent City Con. For CoastCon, Doug has been everything from MAL to Chairman and Gopher to Director of Operations. Karen has done everything from Secretary to Member-At-Large and Hospitality to Registration. She’s currently the Social Media Manager for CoastCon, so if you’ve messaged the Facebook page and received a response, there’s a good chance it’s her!
Doug and Karen currently live in Mandeville, Louisiana, with their rescued Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Gizmo. Doug works at Solomon Group in New Orleans as their IT Manager, and Karen is the Web Specialist for 5 Stones, a marketing company in Hammond.
Please don’t hesitate to come chat, invite them to play something, or even attend the EPIC Gaming gameshows this year at CoastCon 41. They’re looking forward to seeing old friends and making lots of new ones this year!
