CoastCon 40 Costume Contest Rules

Welcome to the CoastCon costume contest! Costume contest registration will be available on Saturday from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM. All contestants MUST register during this time.

Upon registering, a sticker will be placed on the back of your badge with your contest number. (Examples: A3 = Advanced category, contestant #3)

CoastCon’s Costume Contest categories and awards are as follows:
Best in Show Award – $200 + prizes
Best Advanced (3 or more awards / Best in Show) – $100 + Prizes
Best Journeyman ( 1-3 awards / Best in Show) – $50 + Prizes
Best Novice (No awards) – $25 + Prizes
Youth Best in Show – $25 + Prizes
Children’s Best in Show – Prizes

Adult Division Rules:

  1. The Adult Division is open to ages 17 and up
  2. There will be a limit of 20 slots available in the Adult Divisions. This includes all single and group entries.
  3. Walk on time will be limited to one minute. If you have a sketch you would like to perform, it must be under one minute long. A microphone will be provided upon request. NOTE: we do not have the capability for music to be played during the sketches.
  4. Your costume cannot be externally socketed or have any external wire or electrical hook-ups. If your costume has an excessive flashing or strobe lights, you must inform the Costume Contest staff at the time of registration so the appropriate warnings can be issued to the audience. This is to help avoid any medical issues that could be caused by the lights.
  5. All weapons must be peacebound per CoastCon’s rules.
  6. No nudity, excessive violence, or sexual themes will be tolerated on stage. All of the preceding rules include both standard cosplay and crossplay.
  7. Once you have signed up and are ready to compete, you MUST attend the costume contest walkthrough and pre-judging before the actual contest. Walkthrough and pre-judging will begin at 4:00PM in Panel Room 1 on Saturday, and the contest will begin at 5:30PM. If you do not show up for the walkthrough, you will be disqualified.
  8. The Costume Contest Coordinator can decide to place a competitor in another category depending on their skill or experience (example: moving a participant from the Journeyman to Advanced category). This is done at the Costume Contest Coordinator’s discretion.

Youth Division Rules:

  1. The Youth Division is open to ages 12 – 16. PLEASE NOTE: If a participant is under the age of 14, a parent or guardian must accompany them to the walkthrough and at all times backstage. This is in accordance with CoastCon’s rules.
  2. There will be a limit of 10 slots available in the Youth Divisions. This includes all single and group entries
  3. Walk on time will be limited to one minute. If you have a sketch you would like to perform, it must be under one minute long. A microphone will be provided upon request. NOTE: we do not have the capability for music to be played during the sketches.

IMPORTANT! Please be sure to get something to eat and drink before the Costume Contest Walkthrough. This is recommended so you will not feel bad during the competition.
