CoastCon 40 Costume Contest Rules

Welcome to the CoastCon costume contest! Costume contest registration will be available on Saturday from 11:00 AM until 2:45 PM. All contestants MUST register during this time. You do not have to be in your cosplay upon registering for the contest.

Upon registering, a sticker will be placed on the back of your badge with your contest number. (Examples: A3 = Advanced #3; J5 = Journeyman #5; N9 = Novice # 9; Y7 = Youth # 7; C8 = Children’s # 8.)

CoastCon’s Costume Contest categories and awards are as follows:
Best in Show Award – $200 + prizes
Best Advanced (3 or more awards / Best in Show) – $100 + Prizes
Best Journeyman ( 1-3 awards / Best in Show) – $50 + Prizes
Best Novice (No awards) – $25 + Prizes
Youth Best in Show – $25 + Prizes
Children’s Best in Show – Prizes

Children’s Division Rules:
1. The Children’s Division is open to ages 11 and under. Parents must accompany their children to the walkthrough and at all times backstage.
2. There will be a limit of 10 slots available in the Children’s Division. This includes all single and group entries (Groups will enter under a single entry number).
3. Walk-on time will be limited to one minute. If you have a sketch you would like to perform, it must be under one minute long. A microphone will be provided if requested. NOTE: we do not have the capability for music to be played during sketches.
4. All weapons must be peacebound per CoastCon’s rules. (This includes props, parts on costumes, and footwear.)
5. If a Children Division Entry wishes to be in a group with contests over 17 (ex.: sibling or parent) they have the option to join them in one of the listed Adult Division Categories.
6. The Children’s Division of the CoastCon Costume Contest and the award will be held at the beginning of the event. Children and their parents/guardians may leave after the Children’s Division award is announced. The Children’s Division will feature one award, which will be given for Best in Show.
7. Once you have signed up, you MUST attend the Costume Contest Walkthrough before the actual contest. The Walkthrough will begin at 3:00pm in Panel Room One on Saturday, and the contest begins at 5:00pm. If you do not show up for the Walkthrough, you will be disqualified.

Youth Division Rules:
1. The Youth Division is open to ages 12 – 16. PLEASE NOTE: If a participant is under the page of 14, a parent or guardian must accompany them to the walkthrough and at all times backstage. This is in accordance with CoastCon’s rules.
2. There will be a limit of 10 slots available in the Youth Division. This includes all single and group entries (Groups will enter under a single entry number).
3. Walk-on time will be limited to one minute. If you have a sketch you would like to perform, it must be under one minute long. A microphone will be provided if requested. NOTE: we do not have the capability for music to be played during sketches.
4. Your costume cannot be externally socketed or have any external wire or electrical hookups. If your costume has any excessive, flashing or strobing lights, you must inform the Costume Contest staff at the time of registration so the appropriate warnings can be issued to the audience. This is to help attempt to avoid any medical issues that could be caused by the lights.
5. All weapons must be peacebound per CoastCon’s rules. (This includes props, parts on costumes, and footwear.)
6. No nudity, excessive violence or sexual themes will be tolerated on stage. All of the preceding rules include both standard cosplay and crossplay.
7. If a Youth Division Entry wishes to be in a group with contests over 17 (ex.: sibling or parent) they have the option to join them in one of the listed Adult Division Categories.
8. The Youth Division of the CoastCon Costume Contest and the award will be held immediately following the Children’s Division. Youth and their parents/guardians may leave after the Youth Division award is announced. The Youth Division will feature one award, which will be given for Best in Show.

2. There will be a limit of 20 slots available in the Adult Division. This includes all single and group entries (Groups will enter under a single entry number).
3. Walk-on time will be limited to one minute. If you have a sketch you would like to perform, it must be under one minute long. A microphone will be provided upon request. NOTE: we do not have the capability for music to be played during sketches.
4. Your costume cannot be externally socketed or have any external wire or electrical hookups. If your costume has any excessive, flashing or strobing lights, you must inform the Costume Contest staff at the time of registration so the appropriate warnings can be issued to the audience. 7. If your have a group entering together, they will be categorized by the oldest / most experienced member of the group. (If one member is over 17, the group will be placed in the adult categories. If one group member has at least one award, the whole group will be counted as that.)
8. Once you have signed up and are ready to compete, you MUST attend the Costume Contest Walkthrough/Prejudging before the actual contest. The Walkthrough will begin at 3:00pm in Panel Room One on Saturday, and the contest begins at 5:00pm. If you do not show up for the Walkthrough, you will be disqualified.

IMPORTANT! Please be sure to get something to eat or drink before the Costume Contest Walkthrough. This is recommended so you will not feel bad during the competition.
